I've tried to cherrypick this variety from bins of circulated Indian cents but never found one. So, I bought this one from a dealer. It looks like a solid Fine which is what the dealer called it.

Is there a generally-accepted explanation for how this variety was produced?

Is the serif protruding from the Indian's neck from the top or bottom of the 1 digit?

Just wondering!

I think it is generally accepted that this is the base of the '1'. Some have speculated that this variety occurred while doing a hardness test on the die. This is an extremely popular variety although it is more common in the lower grades. It still should carry a substantial premium over a non-variety. Snow gives it a 5-star rating.
