I feel like at one point there was a thread for the worst coins on ebay, which I cannot find anymore. Please feel free to merge this post into that thread if it still exists.

Saw this gem on ebay today with "nice looking eye appeal".

One common novice mistake in numismatics is that people confuse toning with good eye appeal. Big misconception here.
Toning provides an opportunity--an opportunity for a coin to show good character...that being said, the opportunity could be completely missed and the toning will adversely affect the coin in the case of deep, black spotting that could be considered environmental damage.

From my experience, ~60% of the toned coins I see have negative eye appeal, according to the guidelines set by the PCGS. http://www.pcgs.com/eyeappeal.html
