In addition to the wheats, canadian and foreign pennies I find I also roll and keep all my 59 - 81 copper pennies in a bin.

At first it was kind of a novelty but as time has gone by the pile has grown and I find myself wondering for what purpose am I keeping these pennies? It's illegal to melt, copper prices are in the toilet so why not just cash in and use the funds towards something else?

So what are your thoughts? What are the pros and cons of such thinking? Is there really any benefit to holding on to these coins?
Rest in Peace

Unless you are one of those lucky folks who have eagle eyes and spend untold hours looking for die cracks and minor errors and itsy bitzy teenzy weenzy repunched mint marks, I'd suggest you give yourself a cash Christmas present.

As you mention, even if the copper value is greater than the face value, they can't be melted. So the only thing making them worth more than face value is if you do want to spend those untold hours with a microscope (I'd need one) searching for a tiny something.

I keep all copper cents that come my way, as long as they are in decent condition. I doubt they'll ever be worth much.

I suppose sometime after the cents (and perhaps all coins) are no longer made, the ban on melting them will be lifted?

If you need the $$ then cash them in. You aren't getting anything above face for them anytime soon. Saving copper is a very long term play. If you are fine on $$, hold on to them and they may be worth a decent amount in 20+ years.

Thanks.

It's not that I'm desperate for the cash but I've built up so many darn copper pennies I can use the cash towards some ancient coins & artifacts that I've been eyeing up to add to my collection. Not much guilt in the spending if I'm just cashing in my copper pennies. :)

I've got a lot and I do mean a lot of copper pennies......LOL!
Besides silver is where I'd bank my return when I retire, in twenty years I'd be in my seventies......

I keep all of mine. No reason not to. However, I should point out that I seldom roll search and rely on the family change jar. My numbers are manageable.

Its survival money why would anyone want to get rid of their 500 LB hoard of copper pennies for? How would I buy bread and milk when everything goes to hell?
