I recently purchased an original 55lb bucket of uncirculated, still in the wrappers, still in the US Mint bag, in a black ~3gallon bucket that is all 1964 dimes. I'm curious if there is anyone out there that has seen this before, knows how it can be valued? The top lid was opened to validate what was in it (it was originally sealed). It has all the US Mint markings on the bucket and the sealed bag with the dimes inside still wrapped (can't see them, but can feel them). I was present when the bucket was unsealed and I purchased it from someone that I truly do trust so there is no chance of this being a fake.
I've looked everywhere for information on this and have come up with very little. Apparently when they announced the end of the silver dimes in 1964 the US Mint would allow people to buy up to 5 of these buckets at face value. It weighs in at just under 55 lbs total weight.
Any info would be helpful! I don't have a picture of it yet but I will get one put up in a day or so.

Basically the dimes would just be silver value....64 dimes like 2 billion or so were made

It seems like the OP is saying these are original wrapped coins, so UNC? Certainly worth a bit more than melt. Numismedia FMV lists ms63 @ $4.43, ms64 @ $6, and ms65 @ $12.50. Even reducing those prices by 20% or more, you could hopefully find a couple worth more than silver value.

Man, did I do my math right? That would be like 10 grand in silver value alone...

I paid for it based on current bullion value, and yes they would ALL be MS63+ since they are in the original wrappers and mint bag, assuming they were not subject to any environmental issues. I'll get pics up soon.
Anyone ever heard of this kind of thing? I'd like to find some historical reference to this or the program.

Never heard of them being in buckets, I know they currently are transported in HUGE bins to distributors, who roll/box them.
I don't see much of a premium for these, it would take quite a while to go through and pull any gems worthy of slabbing.

I've never heard of anything like you are describing. I also seems very unlikely. The mint shipped coins in $1000 face value bas, not buckets. The never packaged coins in holders or wrapped rolls. And at the time the Mint considered collectors to be "The Enemy" and they were trying to do whatever they could to discard hoarding, so why would they offer ready made hoards directly to "The Enemy"?

Yes, to my knowledge "the mint" has never wrapped coins but what a find! Get some graded and labeled "from the Netbones Hoard" And..... Can't wait to see the pics!
