Just stumbled on this and thought it might be a good deal since there's 70 Sold, and 85 people watching it...

It's about standard really... I am not really interested in the type, and I don't really like slabbed coins. I kind of feel they are inflated because a lot of people are interested in the Bible for some reason, and obsessively so.

I bet if they were described simply as AE prutah and didn't mention the bible connection he would have probably sold far less of them.

David But I can see the interest and it's inexpensive enough to pick up for most collectors that do not have one.
Interesting.

I've just became interested in the type and hopefully will be adding more to my collection. I agree with David though that I don't like seeing ancients slabbed and in this case IMO it was a waste of money to do so. The coin looks overcleaned and the reverse is way off centered. Un-slabbed at least half as much.

The problem with these coins is that they are NOT the ones mentioned in the Bible, but rather just a contemporary issue. The "lepton" referenced in the bible was worth 1/2 of a prutah. So yes, these coins were still in circulation in ca. 4 BC-33 AD, but IMO people interested in Biblical coins should probably pick up an actual Jannaeus lepton, or an issue of Herod the Great, Pontius Pilate, or Herod Agrippa.

Also, the fact that the *stock photos* used show a woefully off-centered coin does not bode well for the coins not pictured. Rule # 1 of ebay is to always avoid listings that do not show the actual coin you will receive.

Okay, I'll stop being a curmudgeon now

I agree with Finn about not buying from sellers who post stock photo's. I did it once from a V-coin dealer and it was OK but generally I never buy anything unseen (which is what you are doing buying from a stock photo)

Also I don't like it when they stage an auction lot with the best pieces on top and every coin obscuring the key details of every other coin... I always presume the worst...
Rest in Peace

Sharing knowledge never makes you a curmudgeon, Finn.

ESPECIALLY when you are RIGHT!!

You do know you can probably get this same coin in nicer (centered) condition for about $20-$25 don't you? There are a kabillion of these out there.

I do not buy coins from ebay and I do not usually buy slabbed coins. I made one exception because of the rarity of the coin. I bought a slabbed Claudius denarius. A while later the slab had a short meeting with my hammer. I still have both the coin and the pieces of the slab.
