Thanks! At the very least, I want to get him a 2008 Silver Proof set. I am also putting together a 1908 circulation set for him.

Ok...so, 2009 will be the 40th anniversary of the moon landing, 2012 will be the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic (although, English history). I'm pretty sure they're making a U.S. Army commemorative in '11 and, well, that's all I can think of. [edit] Oh, looks very likely that there'll be a coin in 2014 honoring the semicentennial of the "Civil Rights Act of 1964", as read on (coinnews.net).

In 2014 they have to have a Commemorative for the 1814 (Johnny Horton) Battle of New Orleans, perhaps minted from the New Orleans mint? Is it still there? War of 1812 Commemorative in 2012. 200th anniversary of the writing of the Star Spangled Banner in 2014. That might be a cool one with rockets bursting in air!

Yeah, if you crack the history books from the year 1492 on........I bet one would be amazed with the "anniversary years" of events that you could find on stuff this year/next year/the year after that/etc.etc.etc.etc.etc!...and stuff that's pretty significant too! SO many to choose from......those committee's who vote on and decide must have a difficult time deciding on "what" exactly to commemorate I'm sure!...

It is not offical yet, legislation was just introduced about a week ago http://secure.numismaster.com/ta/nu...ticleId=4105 quote: In 2014 they have to have a Commemorative for the 1814 (Johnny Horton) Battle of New Orleans, perhaps minted from the New Orleans mint? Is it still there?
That won't happen, at least not the minting in New Orleans part- it is not an official mint anymore and does not have the equipment to mint modern coins. However, the mint is still there and recently reopened as a museum after extensive repairs due to Hurricane Katrina http://secure.numismaster.com/ta/nu...ticleId=4023

2009 is the 40th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots...but unfortunately the United States would never mint a commerative coin honoring the spark that started the LGBT rights movement. Maybe 2019...

When they change the Sacajewea coin in 2009 to depict an accomplishment or feat of Native Americans each year.....I'm interested on what that will be !....There are so many different things. Some want this coin left alone.....but I'm thinking this could be pretty cool.... Would there be a Custers Last Stand coin ? ....Ha Ha.....they certainly view this as an accomplishment !......will it highlight battles ? Chief Joesph of the Nez Perce has an AMAZING story !.......but you can go on and on with all that kind of stuff......so many famous people and places and historical stuff to be recognized.........yeah......I'm just really curious about the details of this "change".

I remember reading last year that Louis Braille's 200th birthday would be honored in 2009 with a silver coin. Haven't seen or heard anything else about it for a long time, so guess it is probably in the process of being completed..
Has anyone else heard of this proposed commemorative coin?

Thanks biokemist6,
I have two dear friends that are blind and since I told them about the Braille Commemorative coin they have keep asking when it is coming out. Now I have an answer and some ideas of what the coin may look like to pass on to them.

This is far-fetched, but I've thought about the mint releasing one or two, maybe up to four different 'reproductions' of our older designs, in the same composition, starting with the Half Cent and moving up to the double eagle. Kind of a like a 'modern look back'.

And if it happens......I WANT THAT 1907 ST. GAUDENS !!......but I'm thinking the price of that coin and the ever increasing future price of gold will make this coin difficult for many to buy ! Could someone please make the price of gold plummet to $362.00 an ounce for me ?......I'd really appreciate it....then, after a year or two, once I've made my purchases....you could let it go back up to $900.00 + an ounce and have it keep climbing.....
