I was wondering if any of you have heard ideas being tossed around for commemorative coins that will come out in a few years? I have not heard much, but would love to see a $5 gold done in the Mercury dime design.

"Any" Classic coin design for a commerative would be a neat idea I think. And I agree on the Mercury idea too.....that'd be interesting and i'd probably get one ! Haven't heard on any "future" designs..... I've never bothered to check into that, I usually just wait & see what comes out.

The second round of commems this year will be the 50th anniversary of NASA and JPL. Ten coins total with a $50 gold coin representing the Sun and nine $1 silver coins for each planet(I guess Congress still considers Pluto to be a planet ) This is an old link from when it was winding its way through Congress but the gist of it is accurate http://www.space.com/news/cs_050719...a_coins.htmlAlso, you won't be seeing a "gold Mercury design" any time soon since it doesn't commemorate anything. Currently, commemoratives have to represent something historical and they are used for fund raising purposes. Many proposals are submitted but only two programs are allowed per year and the process is very selective(not to mention political at times). The NASA program will be raising money for the NASA Family Assistance Fund which provides aid for the families of NASA employees killed in the line of work.

I will wait to see the designs first, but I suspect the NASA coins will definitely be on my buy list!

I agree JBuck !.......THAT sounds interesting for sure ! I just hope that $50.00 gold "Sun" coin is not $1,600.00 by the time it comes out ! Because I'm NOT paying that kind of money.....and of course, with my luck, gold will be the highest it's ever been in history probably and the Mint will charge accordingly of course ! Man !......How in the world (no pun intended!) can I get the "nine planet silver coins" WITHOUT getting the "Sun Coin"......that ain't right ! I NEED TO GET A SECOND JOB NOW ! (I'm only half kidding...i think I might!)...

I was in denial about that possibilty! Thanks for nothing! But seriously, you are right... the one thing I want to buy when it comes out ends up being the thing that I should wait to buy if/when gold comes back down. Again, it depends on the design. If I really like it, I'll just have to grit my teeth and buy it. It is not like I've never lost money on a mint issued set before!

I'll gamble with "tens" of dollars on US Mint sets and stuff.......but gambling with "hundreds" of dollars on ONE coin is another matter !! But you're right though.......if the "lure" gets me........I'm BUYIN' IT TOO ! LoL

Luckily I have justification for buying anything dated 2008... my son will be born this year. So, I will be buying it for him. Yeah, that's what I will tell the wife to justify the cost of that set!

I don't see the bill for NASA/JPL comm coins going anywhere. If we are lukcy, we will have only one set comm coins in 2008. Plus, I am still saving money for the two first lady 1/2 ounce coins for the second half of the year ($1600 or more for both?).

Doh! You are right, It has not passed the Senate yet but the House has approved it so it is 1/3 of the way there.

I would like to see a tetrahedral shaped commemorative coin honoring the late Bucky Fuller. I think it would be a cool coin, and I certainly would buy one.

a tetrahedral, bi-metallic, u.s. bucky buck, with a dome home in the silver center. wouldn't that be cool!

Or maybe they could have a green coin with Al Gore's face on it and an ecological message on the back. I like the idea of a "Late Nite" Coin. It might have Johnny Carson, Steve Allen, and other late nite hosts on it, like on Mt. Rushmore, and it might somehow glow in the dark. I think the Canadians are much more imaginative with their commemoratives than the U.S. But I like the Jackie Robinson, and the Vietnam Memorial, and quite a few others.

They are going to build a Memorial for the Disabled American Veterans in Washington D. I think 2 coin commemorative series wought be appropiate for the D.A.V. and the other one should be of the Puple Heart which was given by George Washington to veterans after the Revolutionary War.
