When I was younger I got my parents to buy me two commemorative coins. http://www.electronicshoppingnetwor...ins/1888.jpgAnd another Statue of liberty Holographic one (i couldn't find a link) Because I thought there were actual money(i was like 10 years old) It turns out they are Liberian currency, I'm very angry I was fooled when I was younger but now I was wondering if you guys could help me distinguish between fakes and legitimate coins. Just some things to keep an eye out for, so I dont get scammed, thanks =)

What kind of coins are you interested in? U.S. coins or commemorative coins of any kind? The Red Book has a very nice section on new and old commemeratives, that helps me out alot. Also I think that most people on here will tell you to avoid buying coins from places with the words "shopping network" in the title. Are the coins you have silver?

Good advice so far here Sean1011 ! The 2009 Official RedBook will list every U.S. Mint coin ever minted including the first Commemorative Coins all through the ones for 2008. This book will really help you with "information" too, which is what you need to arm yourself with. And to be safe.......don't buy anymore Liberian Coinage !...Ha Ha Other countries DO mint "Commemorative US coins" and it ISN'T illegal sadly ! Don't partake in any of the non-US Mint materials until you learned what you need to know. Stay away from "colorized" quarters or anything else colorized ....."gold plated" anything...."platinum plated" anything... Stuff like that is to be avoided like the plague !!.....

Let's not be too harsh. I like to collect elongated coins. If a person wants a coin because it is pretty, does it matter if you personally wouldn't collect it? After a coin has been 'altered', aren't the others, untouched, that much rarer? Save those coins, Sean1011. Someday your grandkid will be asking you if you know how much that sucker is worth. And you won't know, because you kept it for sentimental reasons.

Well....I wouldn't suggest that he get rid of those two Liberian coins at all..... But, he himself voiced being "angry" at what he "thought they might be" and then it turned out otherwise. Then, wanting advice on what to "watch out for", meaning only legitimate U.S. Coinage. That's all I meant, and really just mentioning "self-education" is most important, so that one can buy smartly and exactly what one wants in ones collection ...... Then and only then, is it a "buying choice" made with confidence.

No I have the blackbook price guide to united states coins/ and one for paper money.
Theres a section in the blackbook for commemoratives as well.
but the main reason I started this was just to ask for things that are misleading and things I should look out for.

Sean1011 and Parklane64.....I came across this comment by our Moderator Bryan in another thread. It addresses these "non-US Mint" coins and "Private Mint" issues and concerns. It's very wise and I thought it was worth copying here to read. Quote: I agree with what has been said, unless you are extremely lucky anything you can get from places like this is a waste of money. The "layered" coins will never be worth anything to numismatists because no matter how you look at it these are altered coins and that is just about the fist thing any collector learns when they start collecting, "Do not alter or clean the coins in any way, and if you do so you will ruin any value the coin may have". These companies prey on the uninformed with their highly tactical way with super crazy sales tactics. There have been numerous stories (some even on this forum) where people thought they had this super rare collectible from the franklin mint (in most of the stories these aren't even US minted coins, they are their own minted coins)that their family member cherished all their lives and told them when they died this would go to them and would basically be able to fund their college or something else with the sale of these super rare coins, and its the collectors on forums such as this that have to give them the bad news that since these are privately minted coins instead of US minted coins they are not even worth face value and since they minted so many of them they will probably never be worth anywhere what their family member paid 20 or 30 years before they received the coins. This is a major problem because it can really turn new collectors against the hobby all together when they think they have something valuable (because thats what they have been told their whole lives from their family member they looked up to) and someone they don't even know sitting behind a computer screen tells the the harsh truth. I try to use compassion when this type of story comes onto the forum such as this but some people are just blunt and say it as it is (which isn't wrong, but I know how disappointing it can be when you have come to believe something your whole life and find out its not so). In my opinion I would avoid these type of sales pitches at all cost but some people just like the holders and how they can display them and if they have thought about it and know there is a very big chance that they will never be able to get the money they spent on the coins back if they ever happen to need to sell the coins and they enjoy them for some reason then by all means I will be the last tell someone not to buy something they may enjoy, just be sure you are informed that the resale value will probably never be what you paid

"Silver" Rounds.....more specifically. At least when referring to the 1oz. comm. private mint materials.
