I found something on the back of one of my wheat cents that I'm not sure if it is PMD or a lamination error last night. But... my Internet went down on my computer so I can't post a pic yet.... but how do you tell the difference between that or something else causing damage to the coin? What do you look for?

Here is a page dedicated to laminated Lincoln cents. Take a look at them and use for a comparison: http://www.lincolncentsonline.com/laminations.html

Check to see if the rims are present on both sides. (the area beyond the dies edge) If they are missing then it was altered.

The normal design should be there, if the wheat isn't there, the design has been altered. As cwb mentioned a lamination, (part of the surface peeling away) then that is what it is.

The coin is bent, it may have been altered.

No design, then it was altered if the obverse rim is present.

People work over coins in the shop and what do they do with them? Spend them.
