Guessing he just needed some fast cash - got overextended. I seem to recall doing it once or twice myself.

PS - If it was fake, he could have gotten all of his money back from PCGS.

The area arounfd the 'S' looks disturbed, and it is the only area on the coin that looks to be disturbed. For me, I would be discouraged from taking an interest despite it being TPG'ed.

Just a fail on the flip. Nice coin though.

Quote: Wondering if this coin might be fake. I don't think so it is graded by a noted TPG. I would presume the seller needed to get some money back and, took a small loss.

Perhaps the dealer thought he had a buyer and bought it but the buyer backed out / already bought one somewhere else?

The coin checks out at PCGS and also at CAC but would it be possible, considering the "S" looks suspicious, that the holder was tampered with and a fake coin substituted, or the entire coin and holder is fake? An OGH might make that more possible? How often can or does it happen? How would you know if the case was fake or tampered?
I doubt PCGS would accidentally certify a 1909 VDB with fake S added as genuine.

"oh a minor disturbance so it must be fake." No.
Pretty obvious how to tell if there's an added MM or if it's fake. It is 100% real.

I know there are a lot of fakes out there but I don't think anyone should jump to conclusions. Some people might buy a coin and if it isn't aesthetically pleasing to the eye in person they just may decide to sell and even perhaps try again until they get one more to their liking.

Uh, that's a $28 loss, which is nothing if someone is doing a quick turnaround to raise money. And a nice looking coin.
