Search for body turns up $220K in silver bars
http://www.usatoday.com/story/money...rs/76163782/

What do you think? A few options ......

1).Obviously an ill gotten hoard related to criminal activity which should be seized by the authorities.
(or)
2). Money hungry authorities trying to abuse civil forfeiture laws to seize a survivalist's hoard through heresy and innuendo.

Personally I believe that civil forfeiture laws need to be changed, if authorities cannot provide clear and convincing evidence that the seized goods were related to criminal activity they need to return them in a reasonable amount of time to the accused or their heirs.

Hey, didn't I see that guy on "Doomsday Preppers"... I think he was the horticulture seed guy

Edit to add that 100:1 says that silver is going into county coffers so let's find out which auction company handles their seizures

Remember seeing this on the local news... Wouldn't surprise me any if they had Reps from Silvertowne take a look at it since it is not far from Muncie...

I hope that if they find no evidence of any wrongdoing they return it to the rightful owners... But now everyone will know what they have...

These types of cases can become a bag of worms real quick. The original owner is dead and the documents may be evidence of an illegal dope dealing operation.

I'd guess the asset seizure papers are already being prepared. It's way too easy for the authorities to seize things the way the laws are written. The owner is deemed "guilty" before he even shows up in court and the authorities count on the owner (or his heirs) not showing up and fighting for title. It happens every day in courtrooms all across the United States.

The Authorities would have to prove beyond any doubt what so ever, that the silver is the proceeds of ill gotten gains.
I guess that should also apply to any other claimant as well.

I'm from Indiana & read this story through a few different local media outlet which claimed that marijuana and pills had been recovered in the raid.
http://www.theindychannel.com/news/...-county-raid

The amount of marijuana recovered hasn't been disclosed, but here is a partial list of siezures which authorities are willing to divulge.
116 guns
Several totes and filing cabinets containing documents
Several computers and smartphones
148 pills
$4,582 in cash and coins
44 boxes of ammunition. Multiple gun magazines with ammo. Two ammo belts.
120 silver bars each weighing 100 ounces. 338 silver bars each weighing 10 ounces. Four silver bars of unknown weight.
Numerous one ounce silver coins
1,982 silver dollar coins
Two gold coins
Multiple boxes of U.S. proof sets
A bullet-proof vest
Thousands of dollars in currency, some of it international, including money from Costa Rica and Germany
A pocket knife

I find it hilarious that they listed the pocket knife.

Asset seizures are very expensive to fight in court. The burden of proof is on the owner to prove that the items were obtained with untainted money, or in cases where only cash is seized, that the cash is clean.

If you are driving across country, carrying a bunch of cash to spend at a coin show and get stopped for speeding bad things can happen to you and your money real quick. When you and your belongings get searched they will find the money. First thoughts of the authorities is that the money you are carrying is dirty and that you are on your way to a drug buy. You better have your story straight and your lawyer on speed dial!
