Hey all, I just started collecting pre33 gold coins. I recently purchased a $20 liberty from a LCS in "AU" condition. However I'm noticing some rim dents and a ding. Would this coin be rejected by PCGS or NGC? Did I get squirreled?
To CCF , you bought a raw gold coin in AU condition. you can't blame anyone but yourself if you didn't notice the rim dents. most all LCS will let you return a coin for refund or credit. but only if you don't remove it from the dealers holder. you not only removed it but your touching the coin with your fingers . BIG NO NO . Hey we learn by our mistakes.
I guess it all depends on what you paid. With those rim dings I doubt that it would get into a problem free slab at any of the big 3 TPGs. Melt for these coins is currently $1038. Hopefully you didn't pay much more than 5-10% more than that.
Hope that a negative experience or two doesn't sour you on the hobby. Read these boards and you will be able to avoid many of the common pitfalls in this hobby.
The rim hits might result in a details grade but since this date is valued almost entirely on it's gold content in circulated condition it doesn't matter that much (value wise). Your coin is worth about $1100 retail today. Wholesale value (what a dealer would pay) is no more than it's current $1,035 melt value.
