Nice one again CoinMasters Still looking for an awesome trail die like this. =[ It's so pronounced and visible. I agree it looks more like the 2013P-5DER-002WST, but is your's an earlier die state though? I don't see the markers on "Liberty." Also, did you check for 2013P-5DER-006WST to rule that out. Since you have found 2 now a batch from the same dies could very well have been sent to your area. http://www.traildies.com/2000-2020p...with_trails/

Yes mine is an earlier die state than on the Trail Dies site. The direction of the trail dies on this 002 is 190 degrees, on my 006 it is 180.

Sweet coin(s), congrats! Anybody have any idea what these nickels (the 002 and the 006)might be worth? Trail dies are tough for me to figure out.

This is very interesting. I don't believe I've seen a variety like this until now. Can anyone offer insight as to what causes this effect? Thanks for posting CoinMasters. I'd like to see a full image of the reverse if you have the time. Cheers.

That coin looks all "washed up"... He's a lil "wet behind the ears". ;) I don't believe I've seen anything like that before. Hmm

Thanks Sudz, I like it too. According to "price guides" it's worth under twenty bucks. According to me, it is extremely hard to find one. I'm on the fence about selling it, I like it a lot. If I do, I'll sell it for at least one hundred. CopperCastle, it's a combination of a few things. Thermal expansion, and horizontal movement during hubbing, and one other thing that doesn't come to mind right now. The thermal expansion is due to heat - the metal moves and has "memory". I'm thinking it's the master die that "drags" horizontally as it lifts. Anyway, you probably get the jest of it, it is imparted on the die, hence, there are varieties. Smilewastaken, pretty neat huh? With the advent of the single squeeze hubbing process, fewer strong doubled dies are made, and more trail dies are made. Just my opinion, but trail dies may become the "doubled die" of the future.

I know of one that sold for $75.00, but that was to a nickel enthusiast and he just had to have it. As for the value of trail dies (wavy steps), I do feel that they are an undervalued variety. Maybe one day these oddities will see their true potential. Mean while, I'll still add what is found to http://www.traildies.com

Thanks for the comments, BJ. I was shocked to find a 006 and about a month later, a 002. Prior to that, the only Trail Die I've been able to find was this one: It is so minor, it's overshadowed by the clash. They are harder to find than RPM's, DD's, etc. We are definitely in agreement as to they're being undervalued. I am going to do what I can to rectify that. I feel there are other "nickel enthusiasts" out there that would gladly value these Red Heading varieties more than $100.00. Thank you for your excellent site, http://www.traildies.com.
