Thanks for the comments everyone. This is a note I haven't seen even at all the local shows around the state that I've attended. I found this one online at such a price that I couldn't pass up -- I had to jump on it when I saw it.

I know that feeling wheatback, I've looked for a nice pokerchip at every show and dealer and always come up empty handed. I've seen more Technicolors at shows and dealers than the pokerchip.

The problem is that if I ever did see a pokerchip at a show, it would probably be high grade and completely out of my price range. I got extremely lucky at the last show I went to and managed to find both a $5 "Porthole" and a $5 "Education Series" that were in rough enough shape that I could afford them, but most of what I see at these shows is great eye candy that I just can't afford.

Like the Bison, every Pokerchip I've seen seems to have a "Buy Me" sign on it.

I'm worried that as I start to complete(ish) my modern US Notes collections that I will start to wander off towards those notes that you describe... I'll have to get a second job to support that habit!

Be patient. There are many opportunities (and a lot of enjoyment) in both large and small size notes.

It's hard to be a hero anymore in large notes, but you can surely be a hero in the small note field.

This is the exact reason why I ended up with this note. If you're lucky to come across one at a show, they're all VF and up and will run you $2000 plus. I'll just have to settle with a lower grade for now. (Probably won't ever get one in higher grade )

I just noticed my 1923 $1 note I shipped off for grading was finally updated, it's coming back a 64ppq. I'm thinking The other 2 notes in the series won't be that high of a grade when I finally track them down.

Nice, Dave! I wish my $1 1923 (one posted in the original post) had graded UNC, but it's stuck in a AU55 holder for some reason. I've considered getting it regraded because it is easily a gem in my opinion.

WheatBack - I wouldn't spend the money. Look at my star on page 1 of this thread - same holder. I was convinced it was Unc and resubmitted but same result.

I would agree with your thoughts on that note wheatback. It definitely looks nicer than the grade it was given. I have 2 or 3 more $1 notes in the safe that are as nice as the one I sent in. I wasn't even planning on getting it graded as they are fairly common and don't really get pricey, but I had a free grading certificate. I was actually very surprised it did grade that as I thought it would have been in the 55 range. It's making me rethink some of the notes I haven't sent in. I guess I'm tougher on grading than I need to be.

With respect, I think it is completely impossible to grade a high-end note from a scan, particularly in a holder. The best you can do is judge the centering, and that's about it.

You are right coinfrog, but seeing many notes over the years you can get an idea of what the note "should" grade around. I think wheatbacks note looks as good as this one (that came in this morning). Like I posted earlier I definitely wouldn't have put this note at a 64.

Just curious - tell me why you expected a 55.
