Hello, I have been acquiring PMs for quite a while now. Mostly silver/gold bars, low premium stuff. I have been throwing in a gold coin here and there when I find good deals. I recently found a great deal on a 1oz gold eagle from a very big, known dealer off ebay. After I received the coin it had a brown spot. I have never seen this on a gold piece before. The coin was advertised as "BU", so I was expecting a coin without any large flaws like this.

I'll attach a picture and you guys let me know what you think. I would not be worried about it, but I bought an eagle with intentions of keeping it, handing it down to my children (when/if I have any, haha) and I'd like it to not have this brown spot.

I have contacted the dealer to see if they would exchange the coin or make it right, and so far they have offered a $25 partial refund. I honestly don't want a partial refund, I'd just rather have a coin without the brown spot.

Look at the "E" in "AMERICA", you should see the spot. Thanks in advance for your opinion/comments!

For what you paid for it and what you want it for, if that spot bothered me, I would send it back for a refund or replacement.

That is a likely a carbon spot that are usually caused by the copper/gold alloy in these coins. They develop over time and I've had them "pop-up" after I bought AGEs. Buying .999 gold like American Buffalos greatly reduced the chance of spotting because they are not alloyed. The spot has no effect on the value of the coin and I wouldn't worry about it but it's your coin. The $25 partial refund is what I would take.

Just in case you were wondering, you DID get a BU coin. Since the dealer offered money instead of offering to replace it, my guess is that all he has is coins with flaws, hence the 'great deal'.

If you really want a flawless coin, you need to be prepared to pay for it because that's exactly what collectors want, too. A lot of us hunt for them and study photos for hours and hours. Some of us only buy coins we can see in person.

Return it if you're really unhappy with it but you already got a great deal and an offer of $25. Personally, I'd take the money and wait for gold to go up....some day ....

While you're waiting you can spend time here showing us pics of your bullion.

Thanks for the replies, all.

I am showing my ignorance I guess when it comes to what "BU" means. I guess the discoloring would not effect a grade of the coin or the value. But I'll be honest with you all, I declined their offer of a partial refund this evening. I am really wanting to swap out the coin for one without such a blemish.

I mean I have 100oz OPM silver bars that I am sure you guys have seen, they have a really dull finish and grind marks on the edges. But that is what I paid (in premium) for and I am cool with that. I got a good deal on this Eagle, not like I got it at spot or anything... I think it was $20-$25 over when I purchased it last week.

It was a "random date" sale, I ended up with this 1987. I got giddy at first because I thought I lucked out and got my birth year (1986)... but turns out I wasn't that great at reading roman numerals :D

Rest in Peace

Too bad you didn't get your birth year.

While you may find that spot annoying, it's the only flaw showing up in the pic.

You might be disappointed but I don't think you lost a lot of money on it -- if any. I've made more than one mistake in the few years I've been collecting and I know I have over-paid -- not by a ridiculous amount, but enough to make me slow down for a good long time.
