Okay, first off I want to say something VERY clear: I'm not going to post the link to the video, and I dont want anyone posting the link in this thread... I just want to have a discussion about it.

Basically, Oliver destroyed the cent and wants to get rid of it. And, IMHO hes right, and I would support such a movement IF, and ONLY IF, cents could still be produced for mint sets and proof sets (because then they could turn a profit).
What do you guys think?

A lot of us in the Land of Lincoln are quite fond of the cent and would hate to see it go.

I don't see any problem in keeping it as part of our coinage. Folks that don't care for small change tend to use plastic to pay for everything and needn't be bothered.

lincoln cents are my favorite us coin but even I want to see them go. I hate the new design and zincolns in general... in 10 years zincolns will be rotted out. either stop making cents, or make them better quality

John Oliver brings a very unique view to American culture and issues, mixing his comedic view into serious and occasionally not so serious issues. I have seen several of his rants and generally agree with most of the viewpoints presented, this one in particular.

As has been said many times there is just no way to make a penny worth using anymore. The nickel is there too but at least it could be replaced by a coin for less than its face value for a while at least.

Eliminate the penny now.

I say eliminate the penny for circulation and bring back the Bronze 95% copper coin for NIFC sets. It has always bothered me that even the modern silver proof sets still have a zinc penny in them.

I agree with getting rid of the penny for circulation purposes but minting them for mint sets...
Rest in Peace

If the penny is dropped for circulation it should then be dropped from Mint and Proof sets. Only coins actually minted for circulation should be in these, all others are commemorative or collector "coins".

So, you dont feel that the half dollar or dollar coins should be included in mint and proof sets?

No, if they aren't intended for circulation they shouldn't be in the sets.

There is no need to make every denomination every year if they are not needed for circulation, especially halves which have no legislated programs in most years. We are stuck with making dollar coins that aren't useful *until they eliminate the paper dollar) but the Mint is stuck making them by law.

Kill the cent from circulation.

Oliver made a lot of points that I have made here in the past. He mentioned how there is no material from which the cent can be made that will reduce its cost below one cent. He mentions the zinc lobby. He mentions how we used to have a Half Cent (and managed to rid ourselves of that when it became useless). He mentions how every other modern nation has rid themselves of their bottom feeder denominations. Hello, Canada!

Keeping it in circulation is one of the stupidest things we are doing right now. Wanting it to remain because you like it or would miss it is ignorant and selfish. It is a subsidy at best and pure government waste at worst. Its existence does nothing to slow inflation (on the contrary, it probably adds to it, although by an insignificant amount).

Kill the cent from circulation.

Hi, guys. Is this John Oliver from "Last Week Tonight" you are talking about?
I love the way he combines smart observations with comedy!
I remember he once tackled the issue of US-Cuba relations and how outdated and pointless the Us policy was on the matter. Less than one year later, the re-establishment of relations started. Coincidence? Maybe.
But I would not be surprised if the US Mint decides to stop striking cents anytime soon now.

He didn't say anything we haven't been saying for the past 15 years. Only difference between now and 33 years ago was back then it WAS possible to switch to a cheaper material and make them profitable again. That is't possible today.

You might be able to get them profitable through lower costs if you had them made in Indonesia.
