As most everybody probably knows, the U.S. Mint produced several gold Sacagawea dollars. I think one is in the Smithsonian, and the others are locked away. Anyway, here's my question. In reading through my 2008 Red Book I notice there is no mention of these coins. Anybody know why?

If no one outside the Mint or the Smithsonian has it, would there be a retail value for it ? There would be no bids or prior sales to base a value on.

I do understand that reasoning.
It's just that if it exists, you would think it would be listed, even if a value couldn't be determined.

I guess it could be argued that these were not authorized by Congress and never monotized so they are not actually U.S. coins so they don't make the book.

Once a private individual is able to ownership of one, then I would think they would mention something about it in the footnote.

They've also been for a ride in the space shuttle, so technically the price would be "out of this world" anyway.

They aren't listed bcause they aren't really coins, more like patterns or fantasies. Fantasy would probably be the best description because unlike a pattern there was no real reason to create them. It wasn't a proposed design change, there was no authorization to produce Sacs in gold and no proposals to do so. So thre was no authorization to create them. If they were to be listed in the RedBook it would be back in the patterns section and not with the Sac dollars.
