Can any of the pros here give me an opinion on this camera? I can get this on special today only for $538.00 CDN. I am interested in getting into photography and would at least like to get a good camera to start with, at least better than the P&S I have now. Would this be a good all around camera for the price? Any help is appreciated, Thank you.

ti steel that is a very good camera. if you want to tether it to shoot coins. the software will cost you almost 300.00 dollars Canadian more. I don't know where you live in Canada but best buy stores are offering. a canon t5 with bag and holster plus kit lens for 379.99. the nice thing is the tethering software comes free with the camera. I am tempted to go buy one just for a spare. I have a canon t1i that I really like it is a step down from the t5. the canon cameras perform very well. the Nikon are great camera to but ask yourself what is the main purpose of this camera. if you are interested in mostly coin shooting you will want tethering software. hope this helps you.

Tethering software comes free with all the Canons, FYI. It did with mine and it's awesome.

hello t1 steel. I just found a better buy on the software for the Nikon. Nikon Camera Control Pro 2 Software Full Version for Nikon DSLR Cameras 217.00. this is at Amazon.ca another heads up Nikon is no longer supporting this software. they have announced this so there will be no more firmware updates. if anything goes wrong with the software. there will be no support to get it fixed. I purchased a aftermarket software for my Nikon. it only lasted 3 months and then my computer saw it as a virus. some thing to think about. have a great one

Tethering means you can hook it to your computer and never touch the camera when shooting. Apparently the software costs $300 for the Nikon, it comes with most Canon cameras.
I can focus and everything through the computer, never having to touch the camera to shoot makes for great shots, no movement.

wow...that all sounds very cool...but $300 sound a bit prohibitive...
i guess I will have to settle for muddeling through - a bit longer...

I can actually get great close up shots without ever taking a picture with the camera. I have a T3I and a Canon 100MM lens. I can view what's under the lens at 200% on a full screen on my computer. I can get a date or mint mark under my lens and hit print screen, then paste it into my image editing software and it comes out great.

i have seen some of your images... a couple of years ago - you took an image from a photograph that I dook with my camera...
what ever you did - you made my image look better than my original...
i am still struggling with getting any kind of quality images...
it seems frustrating...

Oh I am, I just have so much on my plate I don't have much time to take pictures. Don't know if you saw the other topics where I took my setup outside for the first time? I got some great action shots and now I'm really hungry for more! Here's one I got on my baseball tourny trip this year...

hello t1 steel did some more checking that Nikon tethering program does not support all Nikon camera. so if you choose a Nikon make sure it will work with the Nikon you choose. I am sure ray or dave will be on here soon t1 steel. these member's have a really good understanding of this stuff. I am very sure they and the rest of us here will help you. but for some of the questions. you will have they are your best support. once you get going they can walk you right though. the steps to get you where you want to go with the coin shooting. have a great one

At this point I can't recommend any Nikon cameras for coins due to lack of the Electronic First Shutter Curtain and free Tethering software. I'd recommend picking the Canon that has the features you want for general use, knowing that whatever model you choose will work wonderfully for coins.
