It's been awhile since I've been able to locate one of these at a modest price. The 1861-O Confederate varieties are becoming increasingly difficult for me to locate, it seems, as more collectors have learned to spot them. This one is the so-called "speared bud" variety, WB-104. Although it's the more "common" CSA variety, I thought it worth getting slabbed - SEGS for $17. Personally, I wanted to make sure it was less likely to be mistaken for a run-of-the-mill coin in the future. Also, given the history of the Confederates having struck these, I expect that they will be more appreciated by future collectors.

To me, coins are all about history. Imagine holding a coin possibly once held by George Washington, or Napoleon, or, in this case, Jefferson Davis!

This coin doesn't need to be a scarce variety.

The Confederate States of America!

Wow!

Concur with BillSnyder on the thought that such coins are treasure capsules.

That said ... would appreciate the inside story on why this seemingly normal USA issued half dollar is indeed a variety of the CSA issue.

I know nothing on the topic ... would indeed appreciate and value some education.

Here's some history on the New Orleans Mint, regarding its operation under the Confederacy.

A numismatic study of the 1861-O half dollar dies was able to pinpoint the varieties that were struck by the Confederates.

The study that identified the different varieties and who struck each of the varieties can be found in the Gobrecht Journal. The first part in in issue 94, but I can't remember which issue held part 2. I was thinking it was issue 97 or 98. Any of them (in fact any issue of the Gobrecht Journal) can be downloaded for free from the Newman Numismatic Portal.

I don't think that link attempt will work. In that case go to the main portal site
https://archive.org/details/newmannumismatic

and then on the right hand side click on "Coin types Liberty Collectors and Collecting Periodicals" That will take you to where you can download any issue of the journal.

Great links Conder Yeah, now I'm instantly obsessed, and the Journal will feed my Type A for quite a while. Need to have one of these CSA half dollars now.
