Hi, I need some expert advice.

I purchased this coin when it was first released, I had it 2 days after the start of ordering. I left it sealed in the box it shipped in, but decided to get it encapsulated and graded. But before sending it off I notice what seemed like a nick on the reverse rim. It doesn't extend into the reeded edge, I have tried to get some photos for you. Is this a mint error or damage and will it affect the grade? It hasn't been removed from its plastic capsule. I've also added a picture from the mint of the full coin because I wasn't able to get a full coin view, but if you know what you are looking for it is visible with the naked eye. 3 photos, on semi zoomed out, and 2,3 cover the length of the abnormality.

Thanks in advance!
G

We have $10 gold Eagles
We have $20 gold Double Eagles
$50 gold Half Unions exist, ($50 Kellog & Co.)

But no one has ever thought of a $100 gold Union.
Face value $100, 900 fine, weight 167.15 grams, AGW 4.8375 oz.
Perhaps some clever marketing guru from a major mint will come up with such an idea.
Rest in Peace

If you are talking about the "chatter" on the very edge of the obverse face - that's damage.

The other picture you show almost makes it look like some reeding is missing on the edge. THe photo just isn't good enough (especially inside the capsule) for me to be sure what that is. If there actually is an area on the reeding that is "missing" then it probably is mint error. If it's just been flattened by contact, then it's damage. Again - hard to be sure from those photos.

It's damage. And therefor probably not worth much over melt value. Almost certainly well less than what you paid for it. Spending money to slab such a coin would not make sense.

Thanks for the input, it doesn't extend into the reeding. It does look to me like damage, I guess I was just hoping it wasn't. Can't believe the mint would even release something like that for the price they charged. Imagine that duped by the government. Guess I should have left it sealed.

Again thanks for the feedback.
