Cops bust antiquities dealer with over 3,000 ancient coins
http://www.timesofisrael.com/cops-b...cient-coins/

Quote:
Police and Israel Antiquities Authority agents on Tuesday arrested an art dealer from northern Israel after finding him with over 3,000 illegally obtained ancient coins — valued in the tens of thousands of dollars.

Interesting article. I know that these types of laws are not anything new but if every nation did this would the supply of ancient coins be significantly curtailed leading to higher prices for the remaining 'legal' coins already in private collections?

Your thoughts?

People like this dealer are hurting the hobby and causing countries to create more stricter laws which in turn makes it more difficult to legally buy ancient coins from overseas. I buy from licensed dealers and as long as they follow the law there is o problem importing the coins to the US.

Yes... but you haven't finished the loop. Supply goes down, price goes up... and the incentive for the locals to break the law goes up.

It also depends on what kinds of "laws" we're talking about. If every nation had Greek-style laws, then there would be no such thing as "legal coins in private collections", not as we currently understand the concept, anyway.

When laws are unjust, people are bound to break them.

Sounds like his collection is in reality just so much 'junk' which he accumulated over a period of years combing the fields.
The antiquities authorities are certainly smart enough to know better.
It sounds to me like he refused to share with the inspector.
Baksheesh may be a Turkish word. But it is in common usage throughout the Near East.
