Like, why is it really a grading option in general? This cent in particular looks completely normal IMHO.

Well it's the tone that looks off.. It's not red like a red cent should be, and it's not red brown.. Is for sure not brown.. If it weren't in the slab I would say it could be the lighting, but the coil looks orange kinda.. My guess for the color designation is because they want you to know something is wrong.. I can't tell you how many people have showed me a coin they said looked real good, and it was polished to the gill... Especially pennies

Yeah , this coin is so close to original but has a very light off tone that doesn't quite sit right with TPG. I'm thinking some people would not even know it's questionable color if it was raw.

When it's not obvious, they decide if they want the coin in one of their holders. All the major TPGs have a pretty set range for how a coin must look before they will grade it.
