I have always had a penchant for privy maples and 5 years ago I set out to build the highest grade set of privy maples ever achieved. This has been a tough but rewarding journey.

Now, the one thorn in my side is the 2004 Monkey Privy Maple. It isn't the lowest mintage, it isn't the as coveted as some of the other privy maples, but it is a condition rarity.

I have submitted 20 of these coins to NGC over the past 5 years, with only one achieving SP66, and the rest mostly SP63-SP65.

Why do they grade so low? Milk spots. On almost every one of these coins, no matter the seller, the Queen's face is covered in milk spots. There are milk spots all over the reverse as well. Any coin grading over SP67 likely has done so prior to the development of the milk in the holder.

Anyway, for those who care, this coin is very quickly becoming difficult to acquire in SP65+. Attached:

It couldn't be any scarcer that when the minting of the issue was completed.
Price could be up as a result of current demand, and that fewer may be available for sale.

Are you not concerned that your slabbed privy's will develop spots some time in the future. This is why I'm hanging back on getting more than 3 privy wolves. I really like the birds of prey, but when slabbed coin get the dreaded spots, I'm not willing to pay a $10 spot premium for more privy wolves. Who knows when silver will hit $30,as once spotted its bullion value. Canada has beautiful bullion, if the spot issue was fixed.

I've been reading there's even spots on some Aussie bullion. Too bad the mints don't clean up their act. Some private mints don't seem to have an issue.

You would think the brains at the RCM would figure out what the other major mints use for the rinse to prevent the milk spots, maybe they should try Dove.

In Perth Mint they also invented some useful item, called "capsule". As a result, the traditional bullion coins like "Koala" and " Kookaburra" are very clean (this is not applicable to Sharks, Spider, Crooks - they come in tubes).
Our Maples together with spots have marks, dings and other "signature" signs.
