Hello,
Now that I'm about to finish my Latvia (first republic) silver coin collection (It's a small one, I know, but it took some time to find good coins) and I'm looking toward my next step. In that, I'm looking towards US coins.
In past few months I've been studying the US coinage with great enthusiasm, and acquired or traded a few coins here and there. I was thinking about starting with a 20th century major type set (no gold). Are there any big catches I should be aware of or be careful about (other dealing with possible fakes)?
Where I live (Slovenia) there's not much of an interest for US coinage, and when they do appear, they tend to be greatly overpriced, so I'm bound to buy coins from web (or perhaps at the one coin show per year that is held here).
Also: any advice on storing that kind of set? I really dislike the 2x2's . And while I think Lighthouse Quadrum capsules would be great for bigger coins, the thickness of those capsules makes too strong of a contrast with smaller coins (I have an Austrian 20 kreuzer 1868 coin roughly the size of a nickel and it looks quite absurd in that capsule). Of course, I could go for slabbed coins, but I think I'm just not there yet, if you know what I mean. So I'm looking for an aesthetically pleasing middle road :)

P.S. This question kind of belongs in Main Coin forum as well in Modern and Classic US forums. Feel free to move it if you think it belongs in some other place.

Hrm... Well, I can tell you that getting a decent Trade dollar might be hard, and the Twenty Cent price can be difficult... I assume that you aren't filling a 7070? What type set album are you filling, or are you making your own?

I have a set in a capital plastic display. It is handsome but tediously in assembly if adding one coin at a time. Most examples of the type set are easily assembled.

The hard ones will be the Barber coins depending on the grade you want

It will all depend on the quality level you chose when building your set as I'm just finishing my set with only one coin left. The Barber dime, Quarter, and Half Dollar along with the Standing Liberty quarter and Liberty nickel are the most expensive coins in high grade if you buy Common dates for them and the Morgan and Peace dollar.

I built a set a long time ago that was not certified and it is a nice set assembled 40 years ago at much lower prices. The set I'm assembling now is with certified coins in fairly high condition and it is expensive for me as I'm retired on a fixed income.

There are a couple of albums you can get for US 20th century type set. I wanted to display my 20th century coins, so I bought a framed board you can hang on the wall. The Barber half dollar will be the hardest one to find if you want a higher grade and the most expensive.

Thank's for your input.
Yeah, the Barber will be hard I know, but still ... :)
Qhat kind of albums did you have in mind. I like the board, Badboy, but I'm not into those myself. I know Whitman company has a cheap folder (4$) for 20 century types. Are there any other products out there for that kind of set? The 7070 is on the other hand too much for me now - it's too expensive, and for now I don't dare to step into the 19th century coinage :)

EDIT: After a quick search I find out that US mint also has a 20th century type album. The reviews are mixed from what I gather( Amazon).

Intercept Shield has a US type album that is comparable to the old Dansco 7070. So, that is probably more than you want.

Whitman has a 20th and 21st century type album (Wizard Coin Supply carries them).

Littleton has a 20th century type album (again Wizard has them). If you want just 20th century, this is probably the album for you.

The 20th Century Type Set is a great start towards the U.S. Major Type Set (also known as the Dansco 7070) which is popular as well.

Be sure to post your images when you can so we can live vicariously through your collection!

That Whitman 20th/21st album sure looks just what I've been looking for.
Now to find one where the postage won't cost more than the album itself ...
BTW on Wizard coin cart, there's an shipping option: "International - Will Quote - 5-10 days - $0.00"
Any clue what does that mean?

Edit: nevermind, none of the payment options apply to me.

Was just looking at coin and currency albums on Amazon. One seller has (1) new for $155. And (7) used for $96.-$149. What gives with this? Are these that hard to get?

Yes, sort of anyway. If you're patient and do a lot of looking, you can often find them in the $75 range (used in good condition). The Danco 7070 album is very popular. I've had mine for 30 years.

Sadly, the Dansco 7070 is out of print and has been for awhile. Although it is generally considered to be the "gold standard" in terms of quality, you might have better luck with similar albums produced by other companies. The Intercept Shield type album, for example.

I thought there was an update or extra pages to be added. Why would Dansco want to quit such a popular item.

I wasn't looking for one, I've had mine for a number of years.
