I've seen this question asked many times by roll hunters. All I have to say is once you find one you will know. Even when they are very, very, very, very, very rough. There is always some sort of mirror glow that shines back at you no matter how corroded or hammered the coin is. I found this crusty red and green one today and there was just enough mirror above the date to the right of the bust to catch my eye. Even casino proofs will still have some flash left. The S mintmark is a bit of a dead giveaway too.

I agree; tends to be some mirror shine left on even the worn ones, towards the rim or about the devices. I did find a 1975S nickel that almost looked like a common coin. But the shine was about the rim. Oh yeah...and the S helped too.

The first picture of a 1980 S certainly shows a coin that has been spotted!

Is it possible to find clad proofs by just edge searching?

Quote: Is it possible to find clad proofs by just edge searching? I'd say I can spot a proof well over 90% of the time by the edge. Most of the time the reeding will be very clean and the edge of the coin will appear thicker and have sharper reeding.

Quote: Most of the time the reeding will be very clean and the edge of the coin will appear thicker and have sharper reeding. Bingo. But I have also been fooled many times by the unexpected 1970's and 1980's UNC coins randomly mixed in with the average junk. I once had a box with 18 2009 proofs in it. I can only guess some dealer cracked open a bunch of 2009 proof sets for the Lincolns and dumped the rest. See if you can spot the proofs from the edge.

Quote: Is it possible to find clad proofs by just edge searching? Yes, I have found several clad proof dimes just by edge searching. Fat, crisp rims.
