If I am auctioning maybe one or two coins a month at an average selling price of $60 each, what is a rough calculation I could do to know how much I will lose after the buyer pays the $60?

I think around 11-12% in that price range, but I am not an expert.

Based om my experience, I use 14% total as a guide, 10% to ebay, 3.9% + .35 per transaction to paypal. That's how I get to 14%. Plus shipping fees too.

I pay PayPal $0.30 per transaction + 2.9%. ebay's Final Value Fees are 10% since I don't have a store so I figure 13% to eBay/PayPal.

Shipping and packaging costs are born by the seller too, so your $60 hammer price will cost your another ~$3 to get to the buyer. Figure ~$50 net to you on a $60 sale. Good luck!

Good information. At the level you're looking at that's the way to go. If your business picks up there's eventually a tipping point where getting a store is going to make sense. For example, I pay $20 per month for a store and I only pay 6% to ebay instead of 10% (a 4% savings). The Paypal fee is the same (2.9% plus $0.30 per transaction) but a little math shows that the tipping point is around $500 per month in sales ($20 / 0.04 = $500).

In other words at $500 a month in sales without a store you'll pay about $50 in fees (10%). If you have a store you'll only pay about $30 in fees (6%) but still spend about $50 per month because of the $20 store fee. Anything beyond $500 a month in sales you'd definitely want to have a store.

Thank you for all that. If a buyer returns an item, do you refund the original postage amount too or just the item purchase amount?

To be honest, I'm not sure as I've never charged shipping on my auctions. Perhaps someone else here can answer that.

I just noticed you're in Canada. I'm not sure if the information I provided is the same for Canada and the United States.

I have this site bookmarked. Just plug everything in, and it tells you exactly what you will make once fees come off. This has come in super handy for me when deciding what price to start auctions at.

My store is as given above, 6% plus the 30 cents and 2.9% Paypal, for Buy It Now. And I have no listing fee. So I can offer 150 coins and pay just the store fee, and if I have multiples they can go as a single listing. Once you get larger that is the way to go. I tried it when stores had a low promotional fee for a few months, and found it worthwhile.

15% so I always figure my minimum starting bids at my item cost+5.00 postage and tracking+15% of the total. If it doesn't sell after 3 listings I sell it at the local antique mall or the wife's next garage sale. Most of what I sell I have owned for 20+ years and rarely do not make a profit.

adding 15% to your cost is the easiest and closest estimate I use for break-even point for 10% ebay and normal PP costs.
S&H is over and above that.
