"Mining the depths of junk" tonight.

Picked up a junkish lot of IHC's, 6 coins for $16 ($2.66 a coin.) A "worse than scudzy" 1860 C/N, 1864 Bronze No "L", 1885 Fancy 5, 1886 Type 2, 1889, and a 1906.

Of this lot only 2 looked even remotely worth a fate other than filling holes, the 1902 and the 1864. This is the 1902.

Seller's holder says AU but...yeah, for $2.66? Probably not. You tell me.

AU-53. Looks like weird uneven luster. Not sure if it's been cleaned maybe or dipped.

I was thinking the obverse may have been lightly "album wiped", it looks a bit streaky, unless that's just a poorly mixed planchet.

The reverse luster looks natural but I question the obverse.

Yup. In the old days we had copper and silver cleaning cloths. Chemical-soaked. Used 'em to clean the silverware, when it was still silver. We'd get out our albums and lightly wipe the obverses. Not the reverses, cause those stupid snap-lock holes..yeah. I managed to "Detail" an entire album of Wheat cents from 1909 to 1940 in this manner (minus the nonexistent 14D, 22 No D and 09SVDB, of course.) When I was much much younger. I keep the coins still, a reminder of youth and dumb ideas, and the occasional punishment of having to shine all of the copper-bottomed pots.

Strong Mid AU grade. The obverse does not bother me, looks like it was in a slide type album.

For $2.66, That pays for the lot!
