Back in the 1800's, it was not uncommon for folks to string a coin or two around their neck or for attachment to clothing, necessitating a hole. This was as a precaution, like "keep me and never go broke." Silver and gold were then valued mostly for their metal content, specie. I once read an account about a little slave girl who had a Half Dime strung about her neck by someone who cared.

I don't even own a Capped Bust quarter, and I've seen culls in worse shape sell for $30.

Despite the damage this coin is still easily worth more than the $10 you paid.

Might be a fake in good silver (jeweler's copy), holed for suspension.

I don't like the style of the design, either side.
Chin line on Liberty does not fall away, it looks like that of a younger female.
Wing outline on reverse doesn't exactly match what I have seen in the books for a bust half.

Not much of a loss, even for scrap silver, even if it does turn out to be a jeweler's copy.
Jeweler's copies are much more often found in gold dollars.

well I dont think I will be sending this off for grading any time soon
it is kinda funny the 25c is missing

and another question the scratches, were they done to test the coin back in the day like the pens tellers use to check $20
