The guy who brought these back from Europe said this is the one.

I could paraphrase but there is an excellent article on these coins, if you can believe it, from the November 1916, yes that's 1916, issue of the Numismatist. It's a free online thing. Google search "Coins Showing the Wild Man." Page 487 explains the two wild men. I wonder how this guy figured it out.

You need specialist experience to pick the fakes of the more valuable older European dollar sized coins.

If you don't have that specialized experience (like me), it is essential that you only buy from a specialized dealer, with an unimpeachable reputation, and their prices for these coins can be high, especially if they are European based.

There are lesser European dealers as well, of course. OK, if you are sure of their reputation.

I would never pretend to be able authenticate this coin but the guy who recommended it is one of the top 100 world numismatists. Also it is slabbed NGC AU53.
