Hello all. New to the forum. I am an avid metal detector and found what initially appeared to be an 1807 Mexican 8 Reales last weekend in south-central TX. I found it on a old property with 200+ year old live oaks so it at least seemed plausible. That said, after doing some preliminary research there are numerous discrepancies in the lettering on the coin and the weight is off (around 25.5 grams). The toning / corrosion on the surface seems odd as well. Would appreciate any insight on its authenticity (or lack thereof), and if it is a counterfeit when it was mostly likely to have been made. Thanks. Scott

First two photos are as found, next three photos are after cleaning with baking soda.

Agreed that the lettering of CAROLUS seems crude and different. Real or an old fake, cool find! I'm far from an expert on these as far as devices go. The weight is a tad low, but not too far off from where it should be with wear and a missing nick.

Beautiful contemporary counterfeit. I suggest reaching out to "swamperbob" on this forum for more in depth information, he is the author of the reference book on counterfeit 8 reales portrait dollars. Nice find!

First off, welcome, Scott.

I'd also judge it to be a contemporary counterfeit. The "nick" and dimple above the head were likely done to see if it was plated with a core of copper or base metal, although it's likely simply made of a debased silver alloy.

Very nice discovery piece. Thought about collecting Mexico fakes but gave them to Bob a couple years ago.

I agree a very nice find. A contemporary circulating counterfeit that is Class 1. It is a new as yet undocumented variety. It is also exceptionally crude. There is a distinctive stop before DEI which is very odd. Likely a local counterfeit that had a small initial production and minimal circulation. The coin was likely thrown away in the belief it was worthless.

Today it is worth in my opinion about $ 100 to a specialist.

Thanks to everyone for your insights & commentary. I finally borrowed a more accurate scale (0.1 gram) and did some dry / submerged weight measurements to calculate density and calculate the silver/copper alloy. The coin weighs 25.5 grams dry and 22.7 grams submerged, which gives a volume of 2.8 cc's (1 gm per cc). 25.5 grams into 2.8 cc's gives a density of 9.11 grams per cc. Silver density is 10.49 gm/cc and copper is 8.96 gm/cc, so interpolating that implies a 90% copper / 10% silver alloy (+/- 20% given the accuracy limitations of the scale). I hope to repeat the process using an even more accurate (0.01 gram) scale in the future which would improve the +/- accuracy to 2% (from 20%).

I would buy Bob's book, put it up on ebay, the money from the coin will then pay for the book and then you could pocket $50 or more ... LOL. Call it onE-Bay GNL unlisted. If it makes it to ebay ... LOL.

Exceptionally crude piece ... up/down lettering ... etc ... like that big GAP between H&I in HISPAN.
