This may be a first for me. Is this what is commonly referred to as a "Black Beaty" or improperly annealed Nickel? I just happened to open up my old coin book from when I was a kid and it stood out noticeably from the rest. All opinions are appreciated Thanks. Edited by Sudz 12/12/2015 11:48 pm

Maybe? Either it's glare or the bright nickel is showing under the black on the high points indicating it is not a black beauty.

That reminds me that I have a 1964 JN that looks like it comes from improperly annealed stock. Without photos, is that possible? I've read that there is some date spread but don't know if that goes into the 60's as well as late 50's.

should be a solid gunship grey.. any varied color, red or silver showing through is environmental or PMD see examples below. Quote: sel_69l
ANYONE can 'improperly anneal' a nickel in this way. It is something to occupy an idle mind in the coming winter months. because of that it should still have mint luster for a TPG

I can see a tiny glint of copper color around lettering devices, so I guess this guy is PMD. The thing is, the only environmental influence is being exposed to open air after being stuck in the cellophane of a mint set for fifty years!

I can assure you there is no copper showing through. In hand it is shiny (hence the glare), but uniformly dark, darker than my lousy photos suggest. It is even dark on the outside of the rims. Please forgive my misleading pics.

Sudz, no sorry, I was just responding to OcalaFlorida's comment. I agree that you've got a Black Beauty there.

Thanks, Biedercoins, I appreciate your opinion. Heck I value everyone's responses, I still have much to learn! Funny thing about this coin is that I have had it for more than 50 years and didn't know it, that is until I learned about Black Beauties from collectors like yourself, Ocala, and everyone here on CCF. Thanks to all!
