okay, since it has been so quiet I thought i'd pick up a box today. okay, I was going to pick up a box anyways... went across 2 counties today back to my old stomping grounds when I started seriously roll hunting (60 miles away). wife wanted to get away from our neighborhood so we went out that way to visit old friends. hit a bank that didn't have any boxes in the vault. he had to scrape together 50 rolls from various tellers. all but 1 was a brinks roll. only 18 pre-59s, but I did hit 4 wars: 45S, 45P, 44S, and a beautiful 44P that replaces some ratty old thing I had in my folder. No holes filled. the last 2 seem close to impossible: 39D, and 50D. Still determined to pull these from circulation though.

good luck on getting the 39D and 50D. I hit my 39D when I was least expecting it, infact I never knew it was a key date till I put it in my whitman folder. Granted I have lots of holes to fill since I live in Canada but the thrill of the hunt is always exciting.

No major pre 60's finds (5 boxes). However the latest 2 finds (both being on the obverse) are a 1983 P Cud (from 5 to 6 O clock) and the best is an off center 1986 P (AU). The 86 P looks to have 2 strikes from the 12 to 6 o clock position and from the 6 to 12 position with about 1/6 of the lettering chopped off. The effect is more pronounced from the 8 to 10 O clock (od we tr in "god we trust"). I know I am saying it wrong but that's the best way I can explain it. I am surprised no one took this out of circulation. I am attaching a pathetic looking pic (no scanner with me) and you can see what I speak of even in this sorry excuse for a pic. Gothic / Afc, I have been following ebay auctions and the only ones that seem to attract bidding interest are lots with wars / buffs and key date Jefferson's. I also talked to the the local coin shop sometime ago and he said just hang on to them as may be in my sons life time they may be worth something. Peace

just finished probably the worst box of nickels I've had in a LONG time. only 11 pre 59's. no wars...1 pineapple, 1 beaver. pulled my second proof on the box before this. a 2004 Keelboat. that box had the typical 25 pre-59's.

I've never actually purchased a full box .... my searches are $20 at a time (10 rolls) ..... and so the latest 10 rolls were fun indeed ... 11 total pre-1960 nickels with a full date 1923 Buffalo and a 1943-P War silver ..... along with a "REPBVVICLA ITALIANA" 100 Lire dated 1998. Wonder if that Italian coin will pass as legal tender at the local spaghetti restaurant. I commend to you the humble nickel ..... you never know what will show up. David

query for you nickel hunters out there, I've seen it suggested before that one keeps everything '60 and below, beside any key dates, what's the advantage of keeping nickels '60 and below? the composition for a nickel has always been the same (excluding the war years of course)

There is no magic line at 1960 whereby nickels dated earlier become 'special' ..... and you are correct L1011 that the 1960+ have the same inherent value.
I suppose for me the reason for collecting pre-1960 nickels is a subjective one ...... the artist Pablo Picasso is quoted to have said "You have to draw the line somewhere".
There is nothing different in value, composition or whatever between a 1959 nickel and a 1960 or later nickel ...... but I choose to 'draw the line' at 1959.
It say it's all up to the individual preferences of the collector.
From a thrill of the chase perspective ..... I just enjoy finding the 50+ year old coins ......
That's what makes me happy ..... and I say that is what collecting is all about ...... satisfying your own goals in your own way.
Somebody else may choose.... for example ... 1968 as the 'line' ..... good for them for their own reasons.
David

picked up another box today. still pretty dismal. 21 pre-59's no wars, 1 beaver and 1 fish. I keep all from 58 and earlier just for the sake of pulling 50+year old coins. maybe i'll put a few lots up on ebay or something. try turning them into something worthwhile.

Ceylon62 - that was pretty much what I was thinking. If I put these in a bag in my basement and come back to it in 40 years they may be worth something! Or, if we change the metal composition on nickels and go with plastic coated wood or something they'd be nice for my kids to have!

Finished off another box. 31 pre-59's. 1 43S war and 1 1937 full date Buff.
No holes filled/keys found.
Foreign coins from: Panama, Phillipines, Mexico, Canada, Great Brittain, and Denmark. I've never pulled so many foriegn coins in a box before - and no duplicates from any country. Weird.

My last box I finished up this week had 33 pre-60's including a 43P War and a 1919 Buffalo. Definitely one of the better boxes.

Thanks Nickel Searcher, I was wondering why some only collect/hoard pre-1960 nickels since the composition is the same , NOW I know I don't search nickels although I do have a few rolls on unc dates
