Maybe so, but for the price of a nickel ... it was a nice surprise. So was the 39D for that matter. Anyone ever discussed the percentages of older coins found. Seems like there are still a number of older Jefferson's and a few even older Buffalo and V nickels floating around in circulation when other coins don't share the same numbers. |

gmwatson-nickel searcher has some thread on that. https://goccf.com/t/105767 heres one I bought that colorized nickel set that came with the goldplated ones cause I thought they were kinda cool. Still have em. Was only $20 and I liked it. but yeah they really arent worth it. |

Did box 13 today and the results made me happy. Got the 53s hole filler  so down to 16 holes (one is the stupid 09p and I am in Indiana and have 2 09d) Also got what appears to be a cracked die 1983 (pics here https://goccf.com/t/106650 However the best fine can be seen here https://goccf.com/t/106651 a lovely 1927 buffalo. Box 38: 2009-P (X3), 2001-S (proof), 1974-S (proof), 1966 (high AU), 1965 (high AU), 1947-P (nice AU). One fish nickel. These brought me up to 5 proofs from circulation! (Including two 1974's).

Newby question: Are all nickels with a "S" mint mark proofs?

bbradford71, not all nickels with an S are proofs, but all nickels with an S from 1971 to current are proofs. San Francisco made more nickels in 1968 than Denver (Philly didn't make any that year), and there are also lots of circulation strikes from San Fran in 69 and 70 too. These also tend to be very well struck, and you will often find nice AU examples from San Fran these 3 years.

I like to search through rolls of nickels too.
I've never found anything older than a 38 Jefferson, but I have found quite a few silver nickels.
What do you usually do with the ones you keep? I save from 1959 and earlier, except I do save the S ones from 1968-70. I will save any 2009s that I find, since they are a very low mintage compared to current mintages.
I put mine in plastic coin tubes and sort them by year and mintmark. I have close to 100 tubes already.

Thanks that helps, I have found several "S" mint mark nickels all from before 1960, did not know if those were proof strikes as most nickels I have found from that time period were minted in Denver or had no mint mark at all. San Francisco didn't start minting proof coins until 1968. Before that, proof coins were only minted at Philadelphia. Edited by wquinn

I have to say, I have really been enjoying searching the nickel rolls, unlike the half's and dimes it is fun finding lots of coins to keep, on average several per roll. Granted they are not of real value, but I just love pulling a decent coin from a roll that is 60-70 years old, it still amazes me that coins this old are still very abundant in circulation.

I will buy a box of nickels and a box of dimes. When I finish the dimes and get skunked then I move onto the nickels. Always have about 20 or more keepers. May not be worth a lot but it sure is fun. And it's exciting trying to complete a whole set from circulation. I have 5 holes left to fill. |
