Welcome to the nickel searchers dude! Here's some tricks and tips to get you started. 1. Don't pull 1959-D 1959 1958-D 1957-D 1957 1956-D 1939 unless its nice 1941 1940 1946 1947 1948 1949 1952 1953 I mean you can if you want, but I have found that after a lot of searching (111 boxes? I think) these show up a lot and you end up keep droves of nickels that aren't really that rare. Notice that I didn't include 1958 on that list, because those are definitely keepers. 2. Henning nickels 1939, 1944, 1946, 1947, 1953 guys correct me if I am wrong but these are the henning nickel years. Hennings nickels are counterfiet nickels made by some dude named Hennning in the 50's or something, anyway the way to check if its a henning is to look on the back (reverse) and look at the R in "PLURIBUS" the R will have a hole in the leg. It's very noticable, I've never found one but other people have. On the 1944, the 'P" over the Monticello on the back will be missing. 3. 1 box of nickels, and 2 box of pennies A DAY? I don't know how much time you have on your hands but that is gonna take a while, and you mentioned insufficient funding so you might have to dump everyday or so. 4. be nice to your tellers  good luck dude! |

Thanks for the list.... That will cut down on my nickel stash which saves me money... And I totally do have a lot of time and plan on making this more than just a hobby but actually am looking to make a living off of it. Takes me bout an hour to do a box of nickels and bout 1 1/2 hours for each box of pennies... Eventually(In like 6-8 weeks) I would like to do 2 boxes of nickels and 4 of pennies daily. Starting in 12 days I will have 5 hundred dollars to cycle through so I will be picking up enough for three days at a time and dumping every third day. I have three dump banks I use so I only will visit each one once every 9 days. Oh and I am super nice to tellers and bank staff... I like taking em a dozen doughnuts every once in a while just to keep the wheels greased lol. Well off to the bank I go.... Will post any interesting finds later tonight... Happy hunting everyone :)

If you have already found 2 1939d and 3 1942d, you are doing great. My son and I have been collecting for years and have only 4 1939d. We have found 15 1942d though.

I don't think anyone could make a living off searching boxes of pennies or nickels, or for that matter, dimes or quarters either. It's a great hobby, but don't get burned out by putting pressure on yourself. I do about 1-3 boxes of nickels per week, usually only 1-2, and that is time consuming. It takes me about two hours to do a box of nickels.

Really? I just burn through em so fast and I always wanna do more more more lol... I just finished up a box and 2 of pennies and I just can't wait till tomorrow comes so I can go dump em and get more lol. And todays box of nickels brought me 0 on the silver and 0 on the buffalos... I almost felt bad till I looked up the mintage on the 1938 d I found and saw it was just a little over 5 million. Also found another 2009 d and a nice gold toned 1980 d. Got a bunch of other ones 1959 and older... I think I will set those aside till I have a ton of em and then go through em for rare ones like counterfeit and low mintages. My pennies yielded some nice ones today, thats what is good bout doing both... I think it will be rare to get skunked more than one day in a row if I am searching 9000 coins daily(although physics tells you its not impossible) I am also working on figuring out all the true odds on everything for nickels and pennies.... its a lot of numbers but when I get them all processed I will post it up. These numbers will have nothing to do with actual data I collect from CRH but will actually be numbers from the actual mintage of coins compared plugged in and processed down to stats even vegas would back up lol.... Nice find this week from my brother. He has been laid up the last eight months and has a fair amount of time to search boxes of nickels. He says his War Nickel yield has been rather low for the last several weeks, but he did find this well worn 1950 D a couple of days ago:   IIRC, it's his second one in the last year. |

After a year's absence from rolls, I did a box of cents on saturday, a box of nicks today. My nickel box yields:
2 wars; 42S, 45P
1930 buffalo
2 canadians (way less than I still expect since moving up here to MN)
And 30 assorted old but insignificant keepers. I tend to keep mid 50's and older.
