It may be because once you get into the 1960's, the mintages go up to the hundred millions or higher each year. There is really nothing "special" about nickels just because they were minted before 1960.

Did 2 boxes of nickels and only got a dateless buff and 3 canadians for my efforts.

Went through a box. Ended up with: (2)'39 '41-S '41-D '41 (2)'46 '47-D '48 '52 '52-D '53-D '53-S (2)'56-D '57 '57-D (4)'58-D '59 (3)'59-D. And '83 & '93 Canadian nickels. My 3rd box in a row without a War Nickel. |

Went through a box last night found the following: 2000 English Penn 1985 Jefferson proof 1935 Buffalo 1945-S 1944-P The Buffalo and the War Nickel were found in the same roll. I call that a nice box. I have searched 42 boxes Total War Nickels 30 Total Buffalo 06 Total V nickel 01 Total Proofs 06 |

@ socceraustin23 - The reason a lot of buffs are dateless has to do with the design and the fact that the date is raised. Unlike other coins where the date is below the level of the rim, the buff's date is actually above so it tended to get rubbed down. Nothing(usually) that a vinegar/salt bath can't fix :)
My recent buff just came out of his soak this morning and revealed himself to be a 1916.

Does nickel rust. I found what looks like to be a 1917 Buffalo but looks like it is covered with a rust like gunk. Is there anything I should try in hopes of removing some of this?

@ socceraustin23 - I put a bit of table salt in a cup and then pour in some white vinegar and dissolve the salt then put the nickel in. The chemical reaction will basically etch out the date. It may need to sit in the solution for awhile but I have had a 100% success rate in getting dates out of dateless buffs. You can also use nic-a-date. Does the same thing.
