I saw this link on the Geoffrey Bell Auctions Facebook page this morning.

It gives some perspective on how many steps are in place to make coins, and where errors can occur. It also give you a visual perspective of how uncommon gem condition coins are to find.

The planchets being prepared look to be larger nickel planchets, the ball-bearing wash with water is most likely planchets for proof-like strikes.

The press however, shows 1-cent business strikes from 1998, which are copper-plated zinc (we don't see the plating process in this video).

That is very interesting! For whatever reason I hadn't realized the mint process was quite so fully automated.

Could be manufacturing washers, meets tolerance, the coins are okay.
