So I bought an 1896 Morgan for a pretty good deal. It is graded by PCGS. It's an old rattler. I think it was discounted because the certification number doesn't show up. It starts with 502 and there were a whole batch of these that the numbers were lost. Contacted PCGS and they said I could send it in and they would re holder for free. I think it could upgrade but they said I have to pay for the chance. Should I
A. Keep as is in rattler holder. Think it will hurt when I try to resale.
B. Send in for reholder for free.
C. Try for an upgrade.

If I was going to put it in my Morgan set, I wouldn't worry about it and keep as is. But I have a nice rainbow in same grade as this. Check out the pics and let me know a grade and what you would do. Thanks.

What's the grade on it? If you are certain the coin and holder are genuine then leaving it as-is is the best option.

P.S. PCGS would not have to re-holder it to get it in their database; They might need to verify it in-hand though.

I'm sure it is genuine. Read up on the vertical ion number before purchasing. PCGS said they had to reholder and couldn't just enter into the database. Not sure why. I'm holding off on the grade on it until I get some grades here. Don't want to influence others.

Photos a little fuzzy, but this one looks like it might be MS-65.

It's in a 64 holder. Think I'm going to crack it and take a chance. I believe it has a good shot at 65. Thanks for the help.

I wouldn't crack her out. If you do get a 65, you're gaining maybe $60-$80 of "holder value", barely enough to offset the cost of the reslab and the loss of the OGH premium. In addition, the toning would probably work against the coin's eye appeal grade, being hazy and a bit blotchy.

with paralyse. Why spend $60 in grading fees in hopes of gaining $80 in value? It doesn't look like a 65 and really needs to grade 66 to be worth regrading. It's your money and you might gain $20 if you get lucky? Doesn't add up.
