I have about 50 rolls of BU Lincoln cents, about 20 of them are 1957-P, and the rest from the early 1950's. These are not OBW (they are stored in plastic tubes), and were purchased in bulk by my brother in the mid 1980's. I'm thinking about selling the rolls, but I'm wondering if it would be worth going through the rolls to cherry pick any MS66 or higher coins. Although it's impossible to know whether these rolls were searched in the past, any guesses on the likelihood of finding a truly higher grade coin in about 2500 BU coins? Also, these rolls appear to have nice red mint luster after being stored for 30 years. Is there much risk that opening the tubes and examining the coins will accelerate toning? Thanks!

If the rolls in the tubes have been closed for 30 years then maybe toning may occur. if you do decide to open them , make sure you handle with care and use white cotton gloves .

What years in the early 1950's? There are very few dates/mm combos in the 1950's worth searching but there are a couple.

i think you should check for errors, DDs and RPMs as well as nice grade examples.

The other dates are 1953-P, 1954-P, 1956-P, and one roll of 1947-S. Mostly from Philly mint, so no RPM or OMM. If I find one that might grade as an MS66 or MS67, would it be worth sending to a TPG?

Any of the four dates you mention would be a big winner in a top TPG holder as a MS67RD. Remember getting a 67RD is very, very difficult. As a 66 they become much more common and generally not worth the costs of grading.

What BH said! But for sure I'd be searching for high grade coins. If they haven't toned in 30 years, they are not going to overnight as long as you store them properly.

Thanks, everyone. Looks like I'll be doing some searching (with cotton gloves...!)
