Not an error or anything, but quite an interesting coin I picked up at a show today. A good amount of original mint luster is present. IMO, this is worse than the 22D for die wear. It's hard to believe they even issued coins this poor! When I saw it, I couldn't resist as it's the most extreme case of die wear I've ever seen.

I have seen many way undergraded early branch mint cents that were EF-AU but sold as F-VF because the dealer didn't know the difference between die wear and coin wear. One of the biggest mistakes made when grading early branch mint Lincolns is to assume all wheat lines have to be present for grades above F. This is not true. I have seen AU coins without complete wheat lines due to die wear.

YES! That is exactly my thinking. Oddly, contrary to most collectors and grading services, I see this as an AU coin. I've always felt the 1922D's are way under-graded because of this reason. Almost the entire 1920's series of Lincolns were produced on worn dies.

Your coin is AU55, no two ways about it...some might argue AU50 or 53, but that's just a matter of sematics and personal taste. There's no sane grader who would call that coin anything lower than AU. And yes, the luster and color are original. Other than the exceedingly ugly die wear, there's nothing at all wrong with that coin.
