I know this isn't an

1957-D---Question-About-The-Mint-Mark RPM. it might be a die chip - but it looks unusual - even for that.

can someone explaing what is going on with this coins mint mark.

The is a die crack below the mint mark. The 1950's Wheat cent dies were used way past the normal retirement. So it is common to find strange events happening on these dies. So BU rolls (IE 1954) were so bad that even the BU coins were terrible. SO always check the die state on BU coins from this era.
