The reverse of this 1929 Indian Princely States - Gwalior 1/4 Anna is absolutely awe inspiring!
It is, without a doubt, a hub doubled die! But which class would this one be attributed as?
By looking at the spread between the TWO snakes (where there should be only one), it is very similar to the "Big One" 1955 1¢ DDO! The extreme doubling seems to be isolated to the center North up to the rim. Using a clock as a reference, it seems to effect the area from the center up to the 10 and over to the 2.
I made a four pane collage below showing a normal reverse on the top left, with my coins reverse on the top right, with some close ups of the area in question below them.
So what do you all think? Any and all help will be greatly appreciated!
I am no expert but I am thinking it is a class 4 - Offset Hub Doubling. I wouldn't call it a Class 2 since the doubling is still fairly strong towards the middle. I love Jason Cuvelier's site on the different classes. Check out this link for his class 4 illustrations - http://errorvariety.com/Doubled-dies/class04.html
