So from my local bank I have gotten a total of $220 worth of halves that are CWR's. Most folks usually find silver in CWR rolls, but I don't. It seems that even if I get cents, nickels, or halves I have more luck actually getting machine rolled.
My only dilemma is that I'm not sure how I can actually get machine rolled stuff without getting a whole box (which I can't really get my hands on at the moment...) So, could I place in an order for a box of half dollars, but actually purchase only half the box at one time? Edited by MichioKaku 12/22/2015 7:08 pm

I would suggest asking your bank branch manager, and perhaps work out a deal, you buy half a box one week, and then come and buy the other half next week. The issue being that you need to dump them somewhere else.

I always ask for the vault teller, he/she normally places the coin orders.
In the past, several banks have offered that they were okay with my buying only a few rolls at a time from a box.

Ok. So would I be able to order a box even though they already have CWR's?

MichioKaku , I can tell you are very frustrated in not finding any silver coins. but IMHO stick with the CWR for just a while longer.

I'm not sure if I'm getting someone else's dumps, but if they are, they're from years ago. The rolls are so worn and old that one actually had "1972" written on it.

MichioKaku, Unfortunately, there is no "Yes or No" answer to your questions. People can share there experiences but that can often be misleading if you expect your bank to behave similarly. Fact is most regions, banks, and relationships are different. For example, I have a national bank with probably 10 branches within 30 miles. They all would likely have different answers to your questions. Matter of fact, I've had different employees at the same bank give different answers. It depends on bank/branch policy and how friendly the employee is. Unfortunately, you just have to put in the time and effort. Most importantly, if you don't like the answer by one bank/branch, go down the street to a different branch/bank. OO

I've about given up on halves -- I think too many people search for them. At my local credit union, many were marked and I never got anything good. From other banks I'd get a mix of CWR and Loomis ones, but most were CWR. Never got any silver but would get occasional proofs or the newer ones that were never released for circulation (NIFC).
The best luck I've had was at that same credit union, but I asked the teller for any loose halves in their drawer. These seem to come from people who don't know some are silver. I've found 3 40% silver halves this way and are the only silver halves I've found. Much cheaper too, as they tend to have $5 worth or less in their drawers.

Quote: I've about given up on halves -- I think too many people search for them. This is what puzzles me. When I got back into roll hunting about '09 right at the foot of the price run-up, there was very little competition. Along comes climbing silver prices and people start to jump on the roll hunting boat, then several years later that boat capsizes and leaves us with heavily depressed silver prices. Are there really still that many roll searchers out there, and why?
