My Brother's friend brought this over but has no idea where/when the coin is from. I told them I bet I know a website where someone will know.
Unfortunately, I don't have a scale or calipers with me. Please excuse the use of a phone as a camera.

T'ung Chih, 1862-74. Slightly less common than your average Qing dynasty cash, but still worth just a few bucks.

I'm not sure this one is genuine. It looks like it was cast worn, which is not correct. I have one that I know is fake that looks like this one.

I had assumed that it was sanded or polished to hide wear. I had my doubts as well, but I think this one is doctored but ok.

I'll have to get better pictures with a real camera and maybe you can determine if it is counterfeit once I am home again.
I am torn between both possibilities. Old coins with history behind them are great. However counterfeits have a history of their own and the only counterfeits we can legally own are foreign. I enjoy reading bills and seeing the cultural differences ranging from asking politely that people not produce counterfeits to threats that it is forbidden and will be punished.
