My friend and I found a coin when dredging the river Thames. One side has the inscription 'PRIMA COHORS BRITTANI? LONDONII' the reverse has a horseman and th letters IOX. What era may this coin come from and what might it be worth? Any help is appreciated. It seems to be silver.

Welcome to the forum.

It doesn't sound like a Roman silver coin to me; there's no mention of an emperor's name or portrait. But we'd definitely need to see pics, and preferably some measurements - size and weight - to have a better idea of exactly what it is.

I just found this topic and have to laugh. I think that author of this topic was just reading a book 'The Physician' by Noah Gordon and was only trying to find out, if this coin really existed.

Here is a passage from the book: "When Rob moistened ashes from the fire and rubbed and rubbed, on one side of the blackened disk appeared the words Prima Cohors Britanniae Londonii. His church Latin proved barely equal. "Perhaps it marks the first cohort to be in London," he said. On the other side was a Roman on horseback, and three letters, IOX. "What does IOX mean?" his father asked. He didn't know."
