I believe a coin should be as released. But, some colorized and gilded coins appear on ebay that should be silver, without enhancement. I looked and found a company colorizing coins from just about anywhere. I believe this is technically counterfeiting in Australia, but probably not in many countries. I don't like this, especially for coins that have a colorized version released by the mint. Does anyone else find this an intrusion into true collecting? And how does one know other than the COA from the company that added the enhancement, like that has meaning?

What amazes me is that there is enough business for a company to exist just to 'paint and recolor' coins. I guess there are a lot of people out there that find them attractive, because you see tons of them advertised.

Bur really, I'm not sure I'm more annoyed by someone doing that to a coin after it is issued, or before it is issued, as in the case of the RCM.

I don't know how Canadian collectors even begin to keep up with the new 'products'.
Rest in Peace

If I'm not mistaken the RCM does not issue colorized coins.
I believe they are sent to a company in Germany to be colorized, then I guess sent back to the RCM.
I personally don't like them. that's not the way coins were meant to look. and like moxking says there are so many different ones, enough to drive you crazy and broke !

You are mistaken. The RCM produces many millions of colourized quarters every year, all done at the mint, none take a trip to Germany.

I despise coins and currency that have been defaced by so-called colorization post production. My sister-in-law once gave me a set of colorized 2 dollar bills. I acted like they were great but they went into a SA red kettle soon after.

NO!

It's just wrong!

no, No, NO!!!

Other than my obvious strong feelings about this I suppose there are some people that really enjoy having their painted coins. They can keep them. I also can't stand the thought of all those coin colorers being out of a job this time of year.

I can't stand colorized coins, but I will admit to liking silver coins that have been partially gold plated.

Some are nice, but most are God-awfully ugly.

And then started showing up on paper money forums being reported as "great new finds!" or "I just got this, what is it worth?".
