what a wonderful coin! I do not know how rare/valuable it is but I have a feeling $150 was a good price Quote: Ah, my high standards that's one way to say it, at my lcs they just call me picky and annoying lol

Thanks, all! Just looked at the Pop reports for ANACS, PCGS, and NGC, and there are only 10 PF-61 1897 nickels! Rarest coin I own!

Very nice pick up COTW..I'm pretty surprised a proof made in the 1800's was only $150! I have a small collection of V-Nickels but they are all pretty circulated. I got them before I realized I'd rather have a few higher grade than bulk of circulated coins. The proof you got will be a coin you are going to be proud to own!

Quote: Thanks, all! Just looked at the Pop reports for ANACS, PCGS, and NGC, and there are only 10 PF-61 1897 nickels! Rarest coin I own! I wouldn't call it rare. There may be only 10 graded at 61, but PCGS has graded 471 higher. At PR61 there really isn't a reason to send the coin in to be graded (grading cost vs added value). There may be hundreds of them sitting ungraded in collections. I've looked over the pictures you put up and I'm hoping the scratches shown are on the holder and not the coin. The T in United also looks like it took a hit. I'm not trying to put the coin down if you are happy that's all the matters, but I think with a little more searching you could have bought a nicer coin for similar money. For example http://www.ebay.com/itm/1897-LIBERT...AOSwo6lWQlhL If you would have offered $150 on this one I bet the seller would have accepted it.

What is impressive is any young collector willing to save their money and purchase coins that make them happy. For that I certainly salute your acquisition. Well done. To be fair and balanced ... I do mention that despite the NGC certified population of 10 examples ... this is not a 'rare' coin and many, many of the same date have been judged in higher grade. Congratulations on the coin ... I hope you get a big smile on your face when it shows up. David

Quote: I think my mom is a little annoyed at me since this is the second coin $100 or over that I have bought online this week.. Just tell her there are a LOT of worse things you could be spending your money on. Very nice pick up!

Child , I know your very excited about your new purchase , but perhaps you should have thought this one out a little more. I'm sorry but all that rub in the center of reverse doesn't sit right with me. If the seller offers returns, you might want to take that into consideration. My apologies if I have given you a bad taste in your mouth about this coin.

Absolutely beautiful! The oldest proof I own is a 1954 washington that I picked up on ebay several months ago.
