Didn't know that this variety existed, so never saw one until today. Something to look for amongst the stash of AU coins.

Here is the big question: if this is such a rarity, why is that not indicated on th website Variety Vista, which is maintained by Dr. Wiles himself?

Why is this any different than the 3 different S mint marks used in 1946? Or the the different D marks used in 1952 or the two different used in 1953?

I guess no one else finds this odd, but me.

It may be the difference of planned introduction and unplanned. Mintage is a factor as well. I didn't check VV to see what the planned MM or MMs were though. Maybe it isn't that rare and more unrealized like me (and Ocala).

What I am saying is that I did look at VV. I like how he shows examples of th MM used. Dr. Wiles does not indicate this particular MM as rare for 1962. That is why I find this listing odd. Mainly because it states it was attributed by Dr. Wiles.

I see. Varied opinions. A bit odder amongst the experts I suppose but it happens.

Problem is it states it was attributed by Dr. Wiles. So it is not conflicting experts. It is a conflict with the same person. I am just wondering why Brian is stating this to be a rarity that Dr. Wiles attributed, yet Dr. Wiles does not indicate it as rare on the very site he maintains.

Not sure of the rarity but I found none in 10 rolls which means nothing.
Either way its something interesting to find anything transitional thing is a fun addition to the search for me.
As for Brian coin it is a discovery coin which most likely what added the premium amount or value its also looks very high grade.

Coop, I fully understand that. What I do not understand is why Wiles would not show it as scarce or rare like he does on some of the S mint marks . Especially since he is the one that attributed the coin on Brian's site. And yes Ocala, I believe in a premium for a discovery piece, but he states it is the only one known as well.

I'm not familiar with the numbers for each MMS or if it is known for sure. But I would have to check my stash to see if they are rare or not.
