Ah, gold!

to CCF!

I'll say XF details. Reverse looks strange around the date.

This is a Type 2 (Small Head Indian Princess) Gold Dollar with what looks like a good strike and color. The detail might make AU50 but the coin has the earmarks of an ex-jewelry piece meaning it probably wouldn't grade problem-free. Still, it is a quite valuable piece that would benefit from authentication if you are considering selling it. It's worth about $300 retail.

Thanks very much. Definitely not jewelry. The marks are from being in a corn field for over 150 years. I found it with my metal detector in a pre-civil war Dragoon camp.

AU-50 details sounds about right, but this certainly is not my series.

BobS! So after 150 years laying in the dirt this coin looks this good? Did you have to soak it in anything? Whatever the case maybe I'm impressed. Nice Find!

I only rinsed it in water. I'm guessing the soldiers were paid in gold at this site. I also found a 3 cent silver and my friend found a Seated half dime. Gold usually comes out of the ground looking like it did when it as lost. Being so small probably saved it from being torn up by a plow. These days they dont even plow. Mostly no till farming.

Nice to see some gold posted. This one looks like an AU details coin to me.
