I wouldn't buy it for more than $5. Too much environmental damage.

If you need it & budget dictates, go for it.

Unless you are restricted as to your buying budget (as most of us are) this isn't a coin to buy simply because of the damage and evident corrosion, especially on the reverse. It's better to buy a lower honest grade without problems than it is to buy a little better grade with these kinds of problems.

Quote: I wouldn't buy it for more than $5. Too much environmental damage. I'd probably pay a bit more than that. I like these early Liberty nickels, and this one is in much better shape than any of mine (except maybe the 1883). I actually tried to assemble a set of these nickels once (minus the keys naturally). But the guy selling them for $6 each stopped when his price became $4 (it would've been less than $3 today), and I hadn't seen any since even for the original dollar price (at least, not in anything resembling a bargain bin... I really don't like buying 2x2s, because I don't want my coins entombed in plastic, but for world coins in the $2-$10 range it is often the only way - bargain bins above $2 are very rare).

Is the coin real? The date (last 8) and size of stars (too small) look different than some of the high end graded samples for sale.

Zac, wait for a better coin. IMHO Why buy a damaged coin or a low grade coin? Save your money for a better coin that you like. Not just one to have. One of the CCF members posted this advice when I joined. I'm still learning. @January, in all respect, knowing your geographic area, any U.S. coin would be tough to collect.

The 1888 V-nickel is a semi key. offer him $9 . The coin is really not that drastically bad . His BIN price is not way out in the stratosphere .

That looks much better than my 1888. Someone drilled a 3/16th hole in it to give his girl friend. The best part it only cost a nickel. My teller friend at the bank had several rolls of nickels that were not as long as regular rolls and she felt they were short of coins. So I saved her by paying face for several rolls that an elder lady turned in to the bank. Mostly 6-8 rolls buffs, V`s and 2 lone Sheild`s. Most all worn good but cheap Thats why your teller is your best friend and worth a treat once in a while so they dont forget You

Coin went for $15, too much in my opinion ..... You are better off buying less and make sure quality ..... Quality always pays!

I don't really collect V-Nickels, but I'd pay $5.
