@blastoff , I have been trying to contact my rep since the first week of Dec. to no avail. I will just order from the website or phone in the future and bypass the rep completely. By the looks of this thread and the state of the Canadian coin collecting scene the mint has 1 of 300 releases per year that has any chance of appreciating. I am giving up my MC status and will rely on sales like this to get my coins at a closer to reality price than whatt the mint is offering us. All the best to every one in the New Year!

@Blastoff: My thought, that majority of the collectors, know what exactly they collect. Yes, they might snag here and bite there for the "popular items", but their collection isn't demand driven. So the RCM or dealers sold-out isn't big deal, if they initially didn't think about the coin.

Also done with direct buying from Mint and dropping my MC status. I talked to an engineer at 4D and he said to expect a lot of wildlife commems for 2016 and a laser cut coin. Jeeeeez, how many times can you put a wolf on a silver coin. Blah.

Still relatively new around here and when I read threads like this about the RCM and what happens to prices on most items I am more convinced than ever before not to shop there anymore. Live auctions I go to still have some coin items being bid to levels past RCM retail but I've also picked up many like new RCM items for 1/2 to 1/3 retail - perhaps a combination of patience and luck. Also, it feels a lot better purchasing at a fraction of retail.

Quote: As we can see, the items that discounted, 99% of them - these are exactly the coins, that we wouldn't buy in any case - nor for $100 neither for $50 - not interesting, bad design..etc. I have to disagree. True, I didn't notice any coins in the sale that would be guaranteed to earn a quick profit for someone looking to resell them, but the sale had quite a number of items that I think would be of interest to collectors. Collectors of QEII-themed commemoratives can find a number of individual coins and/or sets marking milestones of the Queen's reign. Collectors of annual proof and/or specimen sets have quite a few to choose from to fill out their collection at attractive prices. Do you collect Canada's silver dollars? I noticed a number of silver dollars available (including the 2002 Queen Mother and 2005 enameled Canadian Flag) at very attractive prices. A collector starting on a SD collection could fill a number of "holes" in their collection via the sale. My point is, the sale features quite a number of interesting and attractive coins for those working on defined collections vs. just hopping from one (hopefully) "hot" coin to the next. Just my thoughts, your mileage may vary.

Looking at some of the sale items and how many are available, I almost get the thought that perhaps they are selling these on behalf of someone else like perhaps RCM or Canada Post. Really, who would have in stock 473 of the year 2000 Tiny Treasures (Baby) Sets and be clearing them at $5.95 each?

I had similar thoughts, it seemed odd for them to have such large quantities for so many different older coins/sets. My understanding, however, is that the RCM destroys its remaining inventory of a coin/set after the item completes its 12-month active sales period. Maybe this is not the case? Regarding Canada Post, I would have imagined that such an excess of inventory would have been included in either last years's "Black Friday/Cyber Monday" sale or this year's. For now, the "mystery" continues...

Thanks CC Ottawa, I was looking for the Poppy dollar. I managed to snag it and the Calgary 2012 silver dollar too. I feel comfortable picking them up at these prices. I feel the prices I paid are fair. Its too bad the Poppy dollar was limited to 1, I would of liked another. I am glad I popped in, I haven't been on since a week prior to Christmas. Wishing everyone a Happy New Year Its really telling when an Oct release is discounted by $20. I feel $60 is a fair price. The pics of it posted on the forum are dazzling. like Commens said good deals for the focused collector. I picked up 3 silver dollars for my collection. Unfortunately I agree with almost all of what has been said on this thread!! It really is a sad state, when buying mint direct. I wonder how much MC will shrink, as by comments here, most will not keep their status. Will it have any effect on how the mint does business. I will be radically curtailing my mint direct purchases also. I need to do what's best for me, and its not throwing away money! Too bad I'm not entering the hobby now, there's so much great advice and the trend is clear on the secondary market. Back in 2012 was the height of the bubble, with price increases, flipping and high silver spot. Back then collectors on the other forum were warning about a bursting bubble. Others advised not to discuss it, as the discussion was certain to trigger the burst. Now its burst, where do we go from here. It seems the coins hit the worst, with price depreciation are from 2013 onwards. How fast will mints self correct. Topic of reps, mine gave me a holiday email, stating when they were taking holidays. This time of year is when most probably take holidays, as last release is Nov and the next is Jan. I wonder if the Reps are seeing the trend of declining orders, I wish I had one when I was ordering more. Now that I am decreasing my orders I get a rep. I've had mine for a bit over a year, and I really have made little use of them. The mint needs to rethink its sales strategy, go with either direct or with dealers. Doing both seems illogical, since dealers are offering better prices. Dealers could be used for the after market sales, once coins sell out. Mint only could offer better savings to collectors. The current system they're competing against each other, it doesn't make sense!! Hopefully a mint employee reads these forums! There are so many members who have dropped off the boards, it seems to point to a current trend in the hobby. I miss how people used to brag about their coins by posting pics and having great discussions. It seems like the heart has gone out of nclt collecting.

Please remember again and again, that you picking up discounted items, with low demand, but appeal to you. You will not find for less than issue , the items , that everyone want. So the bottom line - yes, 99% of items can wait till sales like this one.

The other way to look at this is only 1 % will hold value, that is pretty sad way of collecting and as we see now all larger RCM dealers are offering some type of rewards equalling about 5% on purchases.

Gosh thank you very much PocketChange, I didn't even notice my new status. No idea how many gal collectors but indeed I know for certain we're in the minority -- very glad for your contribution! I think the hobby is far stronger without preconceived stereotypes and therefore we all benefit.

I went to the sale and compared some prices. I went back to 2013 to see how much prices were marked down. The Bison coins are so so.. 31 USD, tho you can still get them for that and less on ebay and with shipping included, so I guess they are inline. However, some coins, are still too expensive. Take the 25th anniversary Piedfort coin. it is still a better deal on ebay than the sale GateWest has. I would imagine if these coins stick around, prices will in time drop. One thing is for sure, or least reinforced in my mind- dealer commissioned coins are a no go for me and are overpriced. Look at all the Bison and Deer coins GateWest is still sitting on, the same ones Silvertowne said were their exclusive... I mean talk about a wash out. I feel bad for collectors who jumped into the series and now has seen coins drop 50-60% on them, thats really bad.
